Institutional theory is a research tradition that traces its origins back to foundational articles that discussed how organizational founding and change were driven less by functional considerations and more by symbolic actions and external influences than the theory at the time assumed (Meyer and Rowan, 1977 ). The purpose of this article is to point to a number of methodological and theoretical problems connected with a theory of institutional change. Nine philosophical‐methodological questions are asked dealing with a wide range of problems rarely raised in neo‐institutional political theory.
